Bloody Gas Heaters

I don't know about other people but I don't use the gas heater in my house. I find it just too expensive to pay the $200 per year just to have it connected and then gas on top of that - just for one heater in my lounge!! This $200 gas service fee might be viable for residents if there were other gas items like gas cooking or hot water but without other gas items it makes no sense to pay this. This pisses me off because Housing NSW spent a LOT of money on these heaters and the complex, expensive and ugly copper pipping that now spreads dangerously over all our houses. Not only that but our very small and limited lounge room now has a heater taking up a wall that we can't do anything with. What a white elephant! For MUCH less (no copper pipping needed)they could have set us up with good electric heating that we could actually use. I'd love to talk to the people that did this - it's a perfevt example of why residents like us should have a voice. Hopefully Village will help!
The only way to make something good out of this I think is for Wentwoth Community Housing or whoever is in charge now, to replace electric cooking and maybe hotwater systems with gas, so the gas service fee becomes viable for residents. Wouldn't mind hearing from anyone else about their use or non use of the heaters.

Yeah questions may have been asked behind closed doors but we were just stone-walled and have to live with the consequences. I wrote a letter and talked to a number of people but have recieved no follow-up on this. The lack of thought, waste and lack of consultation of it all just really gets me.

some thing didn't feel right about the whole gas heaters instalation and i bet questions were asked behind closed doors, the town houses at 15 hope are much smaller so they are perfect for the lounge area but as you know our places are huge xxxxxxx

...the whole thing was very poorly thought through. Expensive and useless for most residents. The fact that they did this not only for us but the whole mountains is a bit of a disaster really - news worthy.

i do use mine but it isn't the right heater for the size for our lounge rooms and there were cheaper gas heaters available so why they picked this type is beyond me and i also use a electric heater on those really cold days as the gas heater is insufficient to do the job alone and yes its expensive.. 9/8/12 Monica

The mind really boggles about why Housing spent so much money installing these gas heaters. Can't seem to get a straight answer out of them.

The stupidity of Dept of Housing in this gas exercise now has a parallel with Wentworth Housing. When the maintenance people came around to my house to put down what maintenance was needed they insisted that my place needed repainting. It didn't, and neither did it need any new carpet downstairs! I talked them out of the carpet, but they insisted on new paint. At the same time other people whose places really did need painting were told it wasn't to be done.
Anyhow, the point for me is that there is no real consultation with tenants - we have no real say. There may not be much we can do about the heaters (although I would be happy to be rid of mine too), but I reckon that if tenants had had a forum like this one for public discussion at the time of the heaters we would have been able to get some respect.

Seem to be having a cold one... Been talking to a lot of people about the gas heaters and it seems that very few people are using them. I only know of two. For others these heaters are a pain because they take up valuable space in what are already very small lounge rooms. I want mine removed. Anyone else?
